Nigeria's Senior Men Basketball Team Defeat The Republic Of Congo

 

The duo of Ike Diogu and Alade Aminu inspired Nigeria’s senior men basketball team, D’Tigers, to a second victory in two games against the Republic of Congo in the ongoing Afrobasket championship in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

In the match played on Friday at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, the indoor gymnasium venue of the championships, Nigeria knocked down Congo 93-75 to go top of the Group D.

Diougu notched up 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the winners while Aminu complimented with the highest return of 23 points and 9 rebounds. Al-Farouq Aminu added 15 points for Nigeria.

In the opening quarter, the coach Ayo Bakare-led team racked up 28 points, maintaining a 10-point lead against their opponents.

Congo struggled to close up the margin in the second frame but at half-time, Nigeria were already maintaining a 53-32 lead.

The Congolese got their game right in the third quarter; they made 26 points and narrowed the margin.

But Nigeria stepped more on the gas pedal in the final stanza of the game and sealed a comfortable victory at the end.

Giovan Oniangue replied with 19 points for the Republic of Congo. Bertrand Boukinda and Kris Morlende made 14 points each in the defeat.

 

Up next for D’Tigers will be Cameroon on Sunday as they look set for proceeding into the championship proper.
