West Brom have confirmed that French striker Nicola Anelka has been handed compassionate leave and will miss this weekend's game with Everton.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker signed a one-year deal with the Midlands side earlier this summer and reportedly left the training ground earlier today having cleared out his locker, amid reports he is retiring from football altogether.
But the Baggies have since confirmed that the player remains at the club and has been handed compassionate leave that will see him miss out on Saturday's match at Goodison Park.
The Birmingham Mail reports that the player's agent has passed away, leading to this morning's sudden departure.
West Brom said in a statement this afternoon: "West Bromwich Albion can confirm that Nicolas Anelka will not be involved in Saturday’s game at Everton.
"The club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds."
Anelka joined the Baggies from Shanghai Shenhua last month and recently said he'd like to finish his career at the club.
